Although I have not posted for a while, I have been working, well... at least since Christmas or so. I have a new years resolution though that I will spend Friday evening for sure working on my sculpture. So far that has been going well. Of course football season is almost over so my weekends will be opening up a bit too.
Anyway, over Christmas break I worked hard to define where the base would attach and was able to work out a good plan for that, over the last two weekends I have been working on retooling to do some metal work for the base. I am still easing into welding. My welds are a bit rough but I am sure I will get back into form shortly.
Overall I am enjoying working with the metal it is a nice change of pace from the carving. The form of the base I am hoping is somewhat reminiscent of a ray of light to reinforce the sun reference. The method I am using is pretty much straight from Sam Spiczka. I started with a cartoon. You can see it in the background of some of the pics. And then worked the rod cold which allows you to really work on the form and make sure it is just what you want while you can still change it. Then once the cage is made I will skin it with small pieces of forged sheet. So far I am likeing the results.

I like that base! It really makes the sculpture pop. Like a great frame on a photo.
